Demo track - DPCM Breakbeats

Postby Absurdist_Lover » Tue Oct 19, 2010 2:07 pm

Being a certain type of geek I've always wondered what it would sound like if someone sampled breakbeats into an NES as DPCM, so shortly after getting Chipsounds I decided to do a little experiment. This is the result - not a full track, just a little sketch. Note that the first drum beat is constructed from samples that ship with Chipsounds.

Incidentally, 4-bit Digi mode produces a much clearer reproduction of the samples but I like this chalky kinda lo-fi NES effect 8)

Still picking up my jaw from the floor from listening to "Escape Route", lots of different stuff going on, lots of chips used, probably one of the best chipsounds demos all around.

yes 4bit digsi do contain more information than NES DPCM, since dpcm is actually a stream of +1/-1 to the DAC, where as 4bit digis are a full 4bit value at each sample. Both are usefull yeah.

That's cool of you to say so. I get so little feedback from my tunes these days... It was my second go at going all out chiptune style, usually I make IDM/glitch/drill beat stuff, but then I thought why not go back to my roots, and boom! :). I'll send you a proper copy if you like..

And those 4-bit (are they really 4 bit?! I haven't counted them yet) digi amens really have a suprising punch to them.

Nothing wrong with IDM/glitch/drill anyway since thats where the insipration for Bidule comes from.

Sure 2^4 =16 possible values, still enough to represent a basic waveform
