Centralized groups repository

Postby boonier » Wed Feb 10, 2010 4:37 am

Hey, been a while again :)

I was wondering about the most effective way to maintain ones own groups across multiple computers. I've looked at the Group Manager set remote catalog but none of the urls i enter seem to work...I realize now of course that there is no xml file to parse at the destination. I use dropbox all the time. Is there a way to change the default group paths?

cheers

The paths ( [folder where Bidule is installed]/groups, <your user>/Library/Application Support/Plogue/Bidule/groups and /Library/Application Support/Plogue/Bidule/groups) cannot be changed.

Distributed revision control might be a bit overkill but that would work, if all computers are running on the same network and
can see each others there are most likely easier solutions to keep things in sync, otherwise it might be worth a try to see if using ln to set one of the predefined groups to a centralized location works.

hi seb,

ln - symbolic links right? I see, that would require all computers being on the same network...can that mean connected through a remote server, in this case, Dropbox?

It would be cool if the group path could be set to a user defined location, or somehow multiple search paths could be set in the prefs

thanks

yes

Unless dropbox uses software to make it's remote storage look like a regular volume/path to the
rest of the OS, no.

It does do that exactly. Its like having a normal folder on each computer. It rsyncs in the back ground each time you log in or on some sort of automatic timer

So this would work then? would I set the symbolic link from the dropbox folder to <your user>/Library/Application Support/Plogue/Bidule/groups...I'm trying to wrap my head round this!

Hi Seb

Its been some time since I visited this. I never did get this to work, and I've been maintaining multiple group folders (unsuccessfully) to try and keep different machines in sync.

Has there been any development since to enable this? or, could the Groups Manager be given a bit of love, so that we could upload groups (privately or publicly) to the repository? (without having to hassle you guys)

cheers

Probably on my third round of this exercise over the years.

I had used JungleDisk for individual group folder/machine backups but never found a 'shared' way of dealing with groups I really liked. I don't always want to update all machines anytime I save a bgrp.

At this point, I'm trying Git because I like to be able to track and share my changes, it's also quite easy to clone to the repo into your groups folder. So far, so good until something else comes along.

Good luck :D
